Mr. Low Yang Chew

Benson Davis Fine Foods is the brainchild of Mr. Low Yang Chew — a seasoned food distributor with more than five decades of experience in the industry.

Following the successful sale of his food distribution business in 2024, Mr. Low looked forward to a well-earned retirement. However, he remained closely connected with long-standing partners across the region. During a holiday to Australia to reconnect with an associate of over 40 years, he was introduced to Simon Friend of Friend & Burrell, where a compelling opportunity in the premium truffle trade emerged.

Recognising both the exceptional quality of the product and the strength of these enduring relationships, Mr. Low saw clear potential to introduce this offering to the region. He made the decision to embark on a new chapter.

At 79, Mr. Low’s return to business reflects not a restart, but a continuation of a lifetime dedicated to the food industry.

Background

The name Benson Davis carries deep family roots. In the early 1950s, Mr. Low’s father (Low See Joo aka SJ Low) established a food trading business importing fresh and canned fruits, vegetables and nuts from Australia to Singapore for the region. In the early 1960s, when Australian export regulations restricted fruit exports to non-Australian companies, he strategically acquired a dormant company owned by a Perth-based Australian to facilitate the continued supply of fruits to Singapore and the region.

That company was Benson Davis & Company.

As the family business evolved over the years and new ventures were established, Benson Davis eventually became dormant. When it came time to name this new chapter in fine foods distribution, Mr. Low chose to revive the historic company — honouring his father’s entrepreneurial foresight, resilience, and cross-border trade legacy.
